Mental Health First Aid (Online)

 Audience

This course can be viewed as “Mental Health 101". It is appropriate for adults looking to improve their mental health literacy, learn the warning signs of mental health problems, and help support those experiencing them. This is an introduction to the importance of mental health awareness.

Mental Health Victoria is dedicated to ensuring our facilitators are equipped to work alongside those with lived and living experience in our courses. We acknowledge the range of experiences individuals bring to the classroom, and place importance on being an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all attendees.

Aims

Participants will learn:

  • The signs and symptoms of common and disabling mental health problems in adults
  • How to provide initial help
  • Where and how to get professional help
  • How to provide mental health first aid in a crisis situation using a practical, evidence-based action plan.

Outline

Developing mental health problems covered include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety problems
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems.

Mental health crises covered:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Severe effects from alcohol or other drug use
  • Aggressive behaviour.
