Course Outline:

Day One -

Module 1 - Approaches and Frameworks:

• Words and language make a difference
• The historical context of peer work
• Values and central philosophies of peer work
• The mental health service system
• Frames of reference about mental illness/distress
• Recovery oriented frameworks and approaches

Module 2 - Understanding the Peer Work Role:

• Consumer & Carer Peer worker role and structures
• Establish & maintain effective relationships with consumers and carers
• Explore consumer and carer preferences, values, needs and goals
• SMART goal setting
• Key tasks of the Peer Worker in Goal Attainment
• Working collaboratively
• Key tasks of a worker – Community of Practice & Reflective Practice

Day Two -

Module 3 - Legal & Ethical Considerations:

• Mental Health & Wellbeing Act 2022
• Introduction to National Standards for Mental Health Services
• Duty of care and dignity of risk
• Ethical Practice
• Integrating ethical principles into team practice

Module 4 - Using Lived Experience:

• Lived experience vs using lived experience
• Lived experience and peer work
• Safe storytelling
• Methods of storytelling
• Ethics and lived experience
• Managing risk in sharing stories.

This course will be highly interactive and a great way to build connections with a network of peer workers.
