Recovery-oriented care supports a person by putting their background, needs, strengths and experiences at the centre of their care. This page contains resources supporting recovery-oriented practice, particularly for those working with people experiencing psychosocial disability.
Mental Health Victoria's position statement on recovery-oriented care outlines the benefits of this approach to mental healthcare:
"Recovery-oriented approaches support a person by putting their background, needs, strengths and experiences at the centre of their care.
"Recovery-oriented care therefore comprises a range of complementary practices adaptable to each individual’s recovery journey."
The resources below are focused on recovery-oriented practice with those experiencing psychosocial disability.
Psychosocial disability can occur when a person's mental health affects their ability to participate fully in society.
While not everyone who has a mental health issue will experience psychosocial disability, those who do can experience severe effects and social disadvantage.
This guide is intended to be used as a guide for good recovery-oriented practice.
The content was codesigned with NDIS participants, carers, workers and providers.
It was a key deliverable of the The NDIS Recovery Oriented Psychosocial Disability Support Project (see below).

Mental Health Victoria ran this project from 2020 to early 2022.
Supported by the Department of Social Services through the NDIS Jobs and Market Fund, it sought to lead an evidence-informed, national approach to professional developmentaimed, and build recovery-oriented capabilities within the NDIS workforce.
This included a series of national workshops, phone and online consultations, and surveys canvassing the perspectives of NDIS participants, carers, workers and providers.
It also involved a major research project undertaken with LaTrobe and Monash Universities.
Download the project's final summary report here and see below for the research reports and supplementary material.
The Current Landscape: Good Practice in Recovery Oriented Psychosocial Disability Support provides a summary of the history of recovery, recovery-oriented practice, the current practice environment, and key considerations for the next phase of research.
The Future Horizon: Practice in Recovery-Oriented Psychosocial Disability Support provides information on how recovery-oriented practice can be applied in the NDIS context.
The third and final research report explores enablers and barriers to NDIS delivered recovery-oriented psychosocial disability support.
