Mental Health Victoria welcomes growing focus on suicide prevention

On 10 September, World Suicide Prevention Day, Mental Health Victoria welcomed the growing momentum for suicide prevention in Australia.

  • In 2017 in Victoria, 621 Victorians took their own lives, which equates to double the annual road toll.
  • For every death by suicide we know there are at least 20 Victorians who will attempt or reattempt suicide, each of these will have a ripple effect, devastating families, friends, workplaces

MHV CEO Angus Clelland said, suicide is a complex, multi-factorial issue that can’t be attributed to a single risk factor. “We need to look beyond the traditional health and human service sectors if we want to imagine a world without suicide”, he said, emphasising the importance of the ‘watershed’ focus we are now seeing in relation to mental health.
