Self-care strategies to prevent vicarious trauma & burnout

 

Vicarious trauma and burnout are major risk factors for  mental health workers. Being able to manage our own trigger responses to repeatedly witnessing the distress of others is essential.

 

Audience

Support workers who deal with clients in distress on a regular basis.

 

Aims

At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Recognise when they are adversely affected by stories of trauma
  • Understand how to manage the impact of vicarious trauma and burnout
  • Develop a toolbox of strategies for self-care.

 

Outline

Content for this workshop will include:

  • Definitions of stress, burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma.
  • The role of empathy, compassion and boundaries in working with clients
  • Strategies for managing burnout / compassion fatigue.
  • Understanding the autonomic nervous system
  • Models of reflective practice.
